Description

The ASNT Publications Department is seeking volunteer subject matter experts to assist staff and various Society committees in the peer review of its educational publications and related content.

ASNT membership, committee involvement, or ASNT certification, while encouraged, is not required to participate in the peer review process.

Reviewers of RNDE must hold a PhD in a related field and have recently published works in NDE.

Expectations for Peer Reviewers

As a peer reviewer, you would use your expertise to

  • Help the Associate Technical Editor assess the quality of a submission
  • Review text and figures for accuracy
  • Review text for completeness
  • Identify areas for improving content
  • Check to see if the amount of tables and figures are within journal limits
  • Provide a clear recommendation of Accept; Major Revision; Minor Revision; or Reject
  • With your recommendation provide a summary (minimum two paragraphs) explaining the reasons for your recommendation and offering constructive feedback for how the submission may be strengthened.

Additional tips for a successful reviewing experience:

  • Peer reviews are anonymous (if providing feedback on a marked-up PDF, please be sure to remove any metadata).
  • Please limit your review to an evaluation of the submission’s originality, relevancy, and methodology. You are only responsible for focusing on the content of assigned submissions rather than grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc.
  • Focus on the big picture. Consider the content of the manuscript: its originality and reasoning, structure, tone, and the soundness of the research rather than focusing on any problems with grammar or syntax. However, you can flag poor-quality writing that detracts from the content of the submission.
  • Respect the confidentiality of peer review.
  • Match your experience to the subject matter. Before you accept a manuscript for review, be sure your experience is a good fit with the topic of the article.
  • Meet your deadlines. Reports are due 21 days from the initial date of assignment.

Earning Certification Points

Becoming a peer reviewer is an excellent way to contribute to the NDT profession while at the same time earning points toward the renewal of your ASNT certification.

Current ACCP Level II, ACCP Professional Level III, and ASNT NDT Level III certification holders can earn recertification credits for their publications activities as listed below. Participants are responsible for documenting their activity.
