Opportunities From: The American Society for Nondestructive Testing

Volunteer: Become a Peer Reviewer for Materials Evaluation

The ASNT Publications Department is seeking volunteer subject matter experts to assist staff and various Society committees in the peer review of its educational publications and related content.

ASNT membership, committee involvement, or ASNT certification, while encouraged, is not required to participate in the peer review process.

Expectations for Peer Reviewers

As a peer reviewer, you would use your expertise to

Help the Associate Technical Editor assess the quality of a submission Review text and figures for accuracy Review text for completeness Identify areas for improving content Check to see if the amount of tables and figures are within journal limits Provide a clear recommendation of Accept; Major Revision; Minor Revision; or Reject With your recommendation provide a summary (minimum two paragraphs) explaining the reasons for your recommendation and offering constructive feedback for how the submission may be strengthened.

Additional tips for a successful reviewing experience:

Peer reviews are anonymous (if providing feedback on a marked-up PDF, please be sure to remove any metadata). Please limit your review to an evaluation of the submission’s originality, relevancy, and methodology. You are only responsible for focusing on the content of assigned submissions rather than grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. Focus on the big picture. Consider the content of the manuscript: its originality and reasoning, structure, tone, and the soundness of the research rather than focusing on any problems with grammar or syntax. However, you can flag poor-quality writing that detracts from the content of the submission. Respect the confidentiality of peer review. Match your experience to the subject matter. Before you accept a manuscript for review, be sure your experience is a good fit with the topic of the article. Meet your deadlines. Reports are due 21 days from the initial date of assignment.  Earning Certification Points

Becoming a peer reviewer is an excellent way to contribute to the NDT profession while at the same time earning points toward the renewal of your ASNT certification.

Current ASNT certificate holders can earn recertification credits for their peer review activities as listed below. Participants are responsible for documenting their activity.

Volunteer: Write for The NDT Technician!

The NDT Technician (TNT) is a bimonthly curated email newsletter for NDT technicians and Level I and Level II practitioners. TNT seeks authors to write articles on emerging technology, training and education, and safety. Articles should be written in a way that introduces readers to NDT fundamentals, methods, applications, and technologies.

Article Guidelines:

Articles submitted to The NDT Technician typically range between 1000 and 3000 words. Text should be written in a Microsoft Word compatible program. (Google Docs is a good alternative to Word.)

Submissions should be original (not published elsewhere, either online or in print).

Photos and Figures

If possible, include images to enhance your text. Photographs and illustrations should be at least 1000 pixels wide at 72 dpi. Height can vary.

Be sure to get permission to reprint illustrations or text that have been used in other publications, online, or belong to other parties. Permission to reprint must come from the copyright holder. (The copyright holder might be an individual, a publishing house, or the organization for which the material was produced.) Copyright holders of illustrations will be credited in the article.

Commercialism

Articles are not to be used for direct promotion of a product, service, or other self-interest. Services may be discussed from the point of view of implementation, insight from an end-user, lessons learned, or any noncommercial point of view. No company names or trademarks should appear in the text, though they may be cited in acknowledgments, references, and author affiliations.

Use generic terms for products: for example, polyaramid instead of Kevlar® and acrylic instead of Plexiglas®.

References

If your submission requires references, they should appear at the end of the text and be listed in the order of occurrence. DOI numbers should be provided if available.

Copyright

ASNT will not publish material without a signed transfer of copyright from the author. Submission of an article implies that the content has not been published elsewhere and will not be published verbatim elsewhere.

The copyright transfer allows the author to link to or share the content electronically, distribute copies for internal use, use the materials for lectures or classroom purposes, and share PDFs for internal company use. Content can be reused in future works provided ASNT is credited as the original source of publication. Content may also be used in derivative publications based on this work.

Volunteer: Write for ASNT's Blog

ASNT’s new blog, ASNT Pulse, is looking for guest bloggers. You are invited to contribute by sharing your industry knowledge on a variety of topics. From technical work to career development tips, writing blog posts provides a unique opportunity to reach the thousands of weekly visitors to ASNT’s website.

Article Guidelines

Following are the submission guidelines for ASNT Pulse.

Length

Articles submitted to ASNT Pulse typically should range between 1000 and 3000 words. Text should be written in a Microsoft Word compatible program. Google Docs is a good alternative to Word.

If possible, include images to enhance your text.

Photos & Illustrations

Photographs and illustrations should be at least 1000 pixels wide at 72 dpi. Height can vary.

Be sure to get permission to reprint illustrations or text that have been used in other publications, online, or belong to other parties. Permission to reprint must come from the copyright holder. (The copyright holder might be an individual, a publishing house, or the organization for which the material was produced.)

Copyright holders of illustrations are credited in the blog post.

Blog posts are not to be used for direct promotion of a product, service, or other self-interest. Services may be discussed from the point of view of implementation, insight from an end-user, lessons learned, or any noncommercial point of view.

No company names or trademarks should appear in the text though they may be cited in acknowledgments, references, and author affiliations.

Use generic terms for products: polyaramid instead of Kevlar® and acrylic instead of Plexiglas®.

References

If your submission requires references, they should appear at the end of the text and be listed in the order of occurrence.

Copyright

ASNT will not publish material without a signed transfer of copyright from the author. Submission of a blog post implies that the content has not been published elsewhere and will not be published verbatim elsewhere.

The copyright transfer allows the author to link to or share the content electronically, distribute copies for internal use, use the materials for lectures or classroom purposes, share pdfs for internal company use. Content can be reused in future works provided ASNT is credited as the source. Content may also be used in derivative publications based on this work.
