Volunteer: Become a Peer Reviewer for ASNT Visual Testing (VT) Handbooks

The ASNT Publications Department is seeking volunteer subject matter experts to assist the ASNT Handbook staff editor and methods committees in the peer review of content for an upcoming VT Handbook.

ASNT membership, committee involvement, or ASNT certification, while encouraged, is not required to participate in the peer review process. 

Expectations for Peer Reviewers

As a peer reviewer, you would use your expertise to:

Help the Handbook Technical Editor assess the overall quality and completeness of a submissionReview text and figures for accuracyReview scientific and technical explanations to ensure that they are instructive, clear, and technically accurateReview equations to ensure that accurate mathematics and consistent symbols are usedReview references to published works to ensure that they are reasonably complete, and indebtedness is acknowledged appropriatelyReview text to ensure that it is free from commercial bias

All Handbook peer reviews are blind reviews—respect the confidentially of the peer review process.Peer reviewers should focus on content not grammar, punctuation, syntax, spelling, etc..Match your experience to the subject matter.Meet your peer review deadlines.

Earning Certification Points

Becoming a peer reviewer is an excellent way to contribute to the NDT profession while at the same time earning points toward the renewal of your ASNT certification.

Current ACCP Level II, ACCP Professional Level III, and ASNT NDT Level III certification holders can earn recertification credits for their publications activities as listed below. Participants are responsible for documenting their activity.

Author or revise one full Study Guide, Q&A Book, PTP book, etc.        3 points

Full publication review as assigned by Publications Department         3 points

Partial publication review as assigned by Publications Department     1 point

ASNT membership, committee involvement, or ASNT certification, while encouraged, is not required to participate in the contribution process. 

 

Expectations for Handbook Contributors

As a contributor, you would use your expertise to:

Provide or update one or more chapters or chapter parts based on the method committee’s approved outlineReview related text by other authors and recommend revisions for the manuscriptEnsure technical accuracy of the manuscriptProvide text that is free from plagiarism and copyright infringementProvide text that it is free from commercial biasUse references and acknowledgements properly to give credit to the work of othersProvide high-resolution color images where necessary to enhance textReview submitted manuscript at least twice before publication
